RADIANT ARTIFACTS

Michael Rosenthal Gallery
San Francisco
opening October 23, 2010

Within the noise of modern culture is a creative force that can transmit optimism and radiance. My process is a form of repetitive prayer that attempts to uncover this force.
In “Radiant Artifacts”, I will create a layered, textile-based installation of recursive artworks launched from recognizable cultural iconography (e.g., Joni Mitchell, science fiction, New Wave, the Muppets, New Age); resulting in a rueful sort of Pop art that explores the oscillation between mass culture and subjective narrative.

color work station installation at Pulse NY

Color Work Station is a meta “studio”. I wanted to make an impression of a studio: reflecting my own permeability to the multitude of references before me, while also celebrating the processes of making art.
The awkward sensibility of the piece is an opening for the viewer. Something incomplete has the potential to evolve and thus facilitates engagement. The end result is like the movie version of my work, oscillating between sculpture, painting & installation while combining my interest in narrative, abstraction, gesture, texture and color to create a multiplicitous dialogue.

Wolfsonian Museum Art Basel Miami

Recursive Objects curated by Todd Oldham
2009, dimensions variable, vinyl, wire, marker, fabric, embroidery, stuffing.
A series of sculptures made in response to the Wolfsonian’s collection will be covertly interspersed throughout the museum. The Wolfsonian has a vast and earnest collection of high design and humble utilitarian items. While the varied backgrounds lend democracy, each piece also resonates with a sense of character. The meaning transferred into these objects by the act of collecting them creates an appealing sense of self-made worth which serves as metaphor for the act of making art. I have made facsimiles of some of these objects (to replace the originals in the exhibition) and also added my own inventions with similarly invented backgrounds.
